The 2008 My Life in Film Film Awards

or as they are affectionately known...the Filmfilms!!!

*beams modestly*

OK, so it's not the greatest name. But I'm short on time and it's kinda catchy so I'm going with it.

Anyway, I'm getting a bit tired of people and films who I think deserve recognition never getting any, and of others getting a lil' too much. So I've created my own film awards to celebrate the talent that I think should be rewarded :D

Oscar Nominations!!!!!

full list here. They're not bad, bit pissed that curious case of bejamin button is leading with 13 nominations (13...13?!?! WHY???) But hey, it doesn't have to win any of them :D

ok, one's I care about:

Best Picture

The Curious of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Yay. Am happy. I adored three of these (Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader and Frost/Nixon) enjoyed another (Milk) and really didn't like one (guess?)

Direction
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Um OK. Vary it a bit please...all of these were great, but, well, they're all the same as Best Picture. Revolutionary Road? The Dark Knight? There are other options people...

Leading Actor
Richard Jenkins, The Visitor
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

I will be mature and concede that Brad Pitt was quite good in CCoBB. However, there are two things missing. Leonardo Di Caprio and Dev Patel. Easily the best male performances of 2008.

Leading Actress
Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Melissa Leo, Frozen River
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kate Winslet, The Reader

ok, I don't think the Academy liked Revolutionary Road AT ALL. Fair enough though, 'cos Kate was far better in The Reader. And yay that it's a leading role!! And congrats to Anne Hathaway!!

Supporting Actor
Josh Brolin, Milk
Robert Downey Jr, Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Michael Shannon, Revolutionary Road

I approve. I've never seen Tropic Thunder, but I think it's nice that Downey Jr got a nomination for a comedy role.

Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, Doubt
Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis, Doubt
Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler

gooo penelope!!!! and I REALLY need to see Doubt.

Adapted Screenplay
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Doubt
Frost/Nixon
The Reader
Slumdog/Millionaire

why is CCoBB everywhere?!?! The writing wasn't that good at all!! They seem to have just given it every category for the hell of it.

Original Screenplay
Frozen River
Happy-Go-Lucky
In Bruges
Milk
Wall-E

YAY!! Wall-E got in!!!

Animated Film
Bolt
Kung-Fu Panda
Wall-E

If Wall-E doesn't get this, the world has issues.

Cinematography
Changeling
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Dark Knight
The Reader
Slumdog Millionaire

Costume Design
Australia
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Duchess
Milk
Revolutionary Road

*fumes* ok, CCoBB is really beginning to annoy. But FINALLY the Duchess. I'm sorry but I loved this film.

Original Score
Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Defiance
Milk
Slumdog Millionaire
Wall-E

I can't say I noticed Milk's score. Defiance had one stunning track (Tuvia Kisses Lilka) and the rest were fair. Am joyful about Thomas Newman, and am wishing the score for Duchess ahd made it.

Original Song
Down To Earth, Wall E
Jai Ho, Slumdog Millionaire
O Saya, Slumdog Millionaire

Jai Ho!! Am listening to it right now. Too too beautiful. But I loved O Saya too, and Down to Earth, In fact, this is the category I'm probs 100% pleased about :D

OK, I can't wait for the Oscars :D

57. La Antena (2007)

An Argentinian silent film, made in 2007. Hmmnn...

An entire city has lost it's voice, and the evil Mr TV is dominating over everyone, determined to carry out a sinister plan which will mean the whole city is under his power forever more. Only one man, his small daughter, his estranged wife and the little eyeless boy of "La Voz" - the only person left with a voice - can save the entire city from this doom.

La Antena is a silent film, but with a twist: it chooses to be. Some critics disliked this film, advising people to go see the "real" masterpieces of the silent era. What makes this film so brilliant though is that it doesn't have to be silent, yet it chooses it as a form of expression. Intertitles are shown, but they act more like subtitles to the frantic mouthing and body gestures, and they are far more interactive with the events, giving the film both an artistic and an unsettling feel.

Despite the fact that La Antena is a film that reflects the cinema of the past, the message is very much one of the future. This film speaks (oh haha) of the power the media has over us, showing a surreal warning of what can happen when we lose our "voices" - our opinions and our ability to think freely for ourselves. La Antena is a film of great beauty and incredible creepiness - think Tim Burton meets Fritz Lang - and is worth seeing if only for the absolute originality and imagination it posseses. Give it a go :)

btw, the whole Tim Burton meets Fritz Lang wasn't my clever idea, but gosh I wish it was!! I would love to be a film critic, just for that...wandering around in some party with a glass of champagne "oh yes dahling, it was simply fabulous, think Sofia Coppola meets Martin Scorsese, only so much more avant-garde."

(Incidently, I have no idea what I just said)

Bafta Nominations...

...are out, and I think I've done quite badly...although this isn't my fault only...yes, predicting Keira was very very out, but I do stand by not predicting fricking Brad Pitt for Supporting Actor. So there. Let's see how I did...

BEST FILM
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- Frost/Nixon
- Milk
- The Reader
- Slumdog Millionaire
how I did: 4/5 (I thought Revolutionary Road instead of The Reader)

OUTSTANDING BRITISH FILM
- Hunger
- In Bruges
- Mamma Mia!
- Man on Wire
- Slumdog Millionaire
ooh, do you notice Slumdog, like Atonement last year, has been predicted for both? Here's to a repeat of last year then!

DIRECTOR
- Clint Eastwood, Changeling
- David Fincher, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- Ron Howard, Frost/Nixon
- Stephen Daldry, The Reader
- Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
- Burn After Reading – Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
- Changeling – J. Michael Straczynski
- I’ve Loved You So Long – Philippe Claudel
- In Bruges – Martin Mcdonagh

how I did: 1/5 (god this is appalling. although tbh, burn after reading shouldn't BE there)

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
- The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button – Eric Roth
- Frost/Nixon – Peter Morgan
- The Reader – David Hare
- Revolutionary Road – Justin Haythe
- Slumdog Millionaire – Simon Beaufoy
how I did: 4/5

FILM NOT IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
- The Baader Meinhof Complex
- Gomorrah
- I've Loved You So Long
- Persepolis
- Waltz With Bashir

ANIMATED FILM
- Persepolis
- Wall E
- Waltz With Bashir
how I did: 3/3 (YEES! Get in there)

LEADING ACTOR
- Frank Langella – Frost/Nixon
- Dev Patel – Slumdog Millionaire
- Sean Penn – Milk
- Brad Pitt – The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button
- Mickey Rourke – The Wrestler
how I did: 4/5 (I'm sorry. But where the bloody hell is Leo DiCaprio?? I don't grudge Dev Patel being on there, 'cos he seems lovely, but replace someone other than Leo, please!!)

LEADING ACTRESS
- Angelina Jolie – Changeling
- Kristin Scott Thomas – I’ve Loved You So Long
- Meryl Streep – Doubt
- Kate Winslet – The Reader
- Kate Winslet – Revolutionary Road
how I did: 3/5. (I didn't think they'd be stupid enough to put Kate up against herself, although she did rock both roles. And I really wanted Keira...)

SUPPORTING ACTOR
- Robert Downey Jr. – Tropic Thunder
- Brendan Gleeson – In Bruges
- Philip Seymour Hoffman – Doubt
- Heath Ledger – The Dark Knight
- Brad Pitt – Burn After Reading
how I did: 3/5

SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- Amy Adams – Doubt
- Penélope Cruz – Vicky Cristina Barcelona
- Freida Pinto – Slumdog Millionaire
- Tilda Swinton – Burn After Reading
- Marisa Tomei – The Wrestler

how I did: 3/5 (I haven't seen Slumdog yet, but if Freida's good in it then it's lovely that she's got a nomination, seeing as she's an unknown. If all she does is stand around I'll be hacked off)

MUSIC
- The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button – Alexandre Desplat
- The Dark Knight – Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard
- Mamma Mia! – Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus
- Slumdog Millionaire – A. R. Rahman

CINEMATOGRAPHY
- Changeling – Tom Stern
- The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button – Claudio Miranda
- The Dark Knight – Wally Pfister
- The Reader – Chris Menges, Roger Deakins
- Slumdog Millionaire – Anthony Dod Mantle
how I did: 2/5

OK, I think I've failed enough. tbh though, although my predictions were pretty much all wrong, I still stick by a lot of my choices, such as Rachel Getting Married's screenplay being better than Burn After Reading's. I'll do my predictions for winners closer to the ceremony...and I will try and do it properly.

58. The History Boys (2006)

yeah, I wrote a short review of it here, but I have to say, on a second viewing, my opinion of it went up by a million points, and tbh it had already been quite high. Amazing acting and one of my favourite ever sceenplays come together to make a near-perfect film

wooooww

it's official...all my university replies came through today, and I've made my choices...

This

became this

Quite scary and all, but I'm also really happy. I'm obviously really happy about the choices, and I'm just chuffed it's all over. If I work hard and get the grades, I have a place at uni!! So so so weird...but so cool too.

It's been snowing like hell over here. Well, it snowed two nights ago and ever since, all the snow has been trampled and turned into ice which is EVERYWHERE and which I have to walk on to get to school. It's so dangerous and scary!!

oh my gosh I'm going to be moving out in ten months. I'm going to be at university!! It's slowly sinking in...this is so so strange
